Looking for Waste in All the Wrong Places: Remember, People ARE the Company!

Occasionally, I receive a call from an owner or a senior executive asking me if I can do something to “fix” his or her employees.  My first tendency is to tell him or her to “look in a mirror”! Most problems, be it cultural, strategic, or operational, are set in motion by the owner or senior management.  While it is convenient to place the blame on “those workers”, in fact the workers want to do a good job but often are not provided the environment to excel, the right tools to do the job and coherent expectations on what they are to do. Greg takes his audience on a journey through the company on where the problems exist and how they can get it under control.  If in fact the people ARE the company, they are also a company’s competitive advantage.  Greg is most passionate about the loss of employees creativity in companies.

Are you a Coach or Referee?

Employees need timely and specific performance feedback. Too often, they are left to wonder how they are doing, unless of course, they do something badly - then they get instant feedback! This all ties in to keeping your current workforce involved, motivated, growing, stretching, satisfied and staying put. It is one of the major keys to employee retention yet the one most managers never learn to do very well if at all.

How Do Your Employees Talk About Work After Work?

Just as people speak poorly about a product they purchased and are not happy with it, employees who speak poorly about their place of employment yields the same results. You might not apply for a job opening because your friend has expressed his displeasure with working there.  What do the numbers show?  If someone doesn't like a product, they tell 8-10 of their friends.  If they like it, they tell 3-5 of their friends about it.  Same thing with looking for a place to work.  If your good buddy tells you it is not a good place to work, you are apt to avoid applying for work there.  The reverse is also true.  If your friend talks about the satisfaction of working at a company, it could influence you positively to look for employment there.  Learn the secrets of keeping workers motivated on the job.

Are You Hiring Rabbits to Swim and Fish to Run?

Recruiting, interviewing and hiring is comparable to dating, courting and marriage. The person you date and court doesn't always show up in the marriage. The same goes for selecting employees. Who you interview doesn't always show up for work. In both courting and interviewing, people are on their best behavior. They want you to like them. In courting, love is blind. Most of the time, selecting officials hire based on "gut" feelings about a person. They never really get any objective information about the applicant; thus they hire the wrong person for the job. Learn how to cut your hiring costs, reduce turnover and hire the right person for the job who has the best chance for succeeding. All of these savings go right to the bottom line!
